A Walk in the Dark

Keys held steady piercing ready to thrust to inflict harm. Foot after foot placed carefully step after step. Head down, alert avoiding attention yet  on guard every sense helping create an itemised list of surroundings. Foot after foot placed carefully step after step. Lump in throat screams gone fight or flight unknown silenced in anticipation fear and dread. Foot after foot placed carefully step after step. Imagined beasts under each rock beside each bush noises betraying their  vantage points Foot after foot placed carefully step after step. Streetlight pooling moving swiftly from  one warm shield to the next a brief respite. Foot after foot placed carefully step after step. Breath unknowingly held released into light keys finding their purpose unlocking. Foot after foot placed carefully step after step. Home. Michaela Sheehan 2021 There have been many people more eloquent than I, writing about how it can feel walking alone as a woman. This terrifies me, not only for m...

Musings

Heart racing, pulse heavy a skittering rhythm bubbles rising ever faster effervescence under my skin sparkling heat skipping over my chest metallic tang flashing on my tongue giggling through a sound out of reach a touch unable to be heard a flash, then gone. Michaela Sheehan  2021

A Thousand Dreams

A thousand dreams live within me. Dreams of long summer days filled with friends laughter. Dreams of snowy castles solitude tucked away on my own. Dreams of love, shared,  taken in small bites increasing in size to take my fill. Dreams of motherhood, of stardom, of music and soul. Of cooking, of celebrating of moons and stars. Dreams of whispered conversations behind closed doors of changing the world one dream at a time. A thousand dreams live within me, within me a thousand dreams live. Michaela Sheehan 2021

On the Bank of a River

On the bank of a river to sit with you is something I'd give anything to do. To hear your voice and see your smile to sit and chat for a little while. We'd waste little time discussing the fluff, instead setting the world right making decisions that are tough. I'd ask your advice on the things I've done wrong you'd hold my hand and pause for too long. Your answer would be honest not what I wanted to hear, but I'd treasure the moment and hold it dear. You'd remind me I'm loved, a thing I often forget, That I'm worthy of time and peoples respect. We'd sit and we'd laugh time would just disappear, you'd tell me you know  I've shed many a tear, In grief and sadness in happiness too I'd smile through more tears tell you how much I miss you. If dreams are free (and I know that they are), I'll picture sitting on the river bank imagining you are not far. That you're watching and listening just out of my sight And I'll strain t...

Blue Light

Blue light illuminates dark a beacon of hope, a sunrise, morning another day. Slow hum escalates to a rumble. Bubbles running like quicksilver, to escape hissing steam clouds a promise of caffeination. Michaela Sheehan 2021

Sounds

Beat building sound layered breath hitched chest tight sound upon sound louder eyes closed unseeing overwhelmed senses gone but beholden to the noise then it's gone. Silence. Press play again. Michaela Sheehan 2021

30 Second Poem

There is a Carl, He is a darl. He sleeps in my bed and his cheeks will go red when he reads this wee ditty he won't find it witty but is shows that I love him and there's no one above him. Michaela Sheehan 2021 Carl asked me if I ever wrote about him, I said not really (mainly because he doesn't make me angsty that often). I then wrote this in 30 seconds flat and read it to him. Yes his cheeks went red!

Ode to my Coffee Machine Part 2

I love you Your sticky droplets flowing slowly at first then faster until a steady stream of your liquid gold spills forth hitting the bottom of my mug, splashing the sides, warming my soul awakening my mind starting my day. I love you. Michaela Sheehan 2021 Sleep is scarce at the moment. Perhaps that is why there are so many sleep/coffee related thoughts in my head!

Cool Side

Click and whirl Pushing around the heavy warm air. Whirling, a low hum attempting to cool my sweaty weary body. The useless fan bearing witness to a desire to sleep. Snores and murmurs from the form next to me Oblivious to my longing, blood boiling,  anger rising at the ease in which sleep has  found them. Temporary solace found in the cool side of the pillow lulling me to oblivion. Michaela Sheehan 2021

Under the Covers

I held your hand under the covers as the world shattered around us. Things thrown and voices raised, I tried to create an oasis a sea of calm under the blankets. Heads buried and favourite songs sung, safe from the tide of emotions slapping against our young bodies, emotions not for us but directionless in their anger. Always holding onto these moments selfishly hoping for them, willing to bear the  storm for this rare,  momentary lapse. Holding to the few precious moments  you have ever needed me. Claiming my status as older. I wish we were holding hands under the covers. Michaela Sheehan 2021

Dreaming Meteorologist

What to do with the thunderstorm in the attic The deluge on the stairs The drought in the lounge The earthquake in the bathroom The blizzard in the kitchen and  The hurricane in the hall. Michaela Sheehan 2021 This was from a prompt I found online - What to do with the thunderstorm in the attic.

Jar

Locked in a jar burning screams silenced limbs stilled eyes frozen, locked on an ever changing scene. A specimen to be viewed. Michaela Sheehan 2021

Words

Jagged, sharp, leaving a metallic taste as they leave the mouth opening old wounds as they are swallowed. Soft, sweet sickly and cloying dishonesty tinging the soft corners. Bold and true. Strong in its delivery unwavering and fresh messages clear. Whispered and fervent murmurings Crimson tipped, falling as a waterfall, seen and understood under covers, in the dark. Silence

Silence Face forward and embrace it. Michaela Sheehan 2021 2021 is bringing its fair share of challenges, just as every year does. I am trying to find a way to be ok with the silence.

Heart

Heart, hurt, beaten and bruised by those who hold it. Callous words spoken freely opinions held, perceptions and lines drawn by the very people who willed it into existence. Pick it up, place it back where it belongs and rebel against the hardness created by its healing. Michaela Sheehan 2021

Planes, Planes, Planes.

Planes, planes, planes. Smile. Not too bright. Dress up.  Don’t appear sullen or smelly or... fat. Stand tall look them in the eye.  Apologetic head tilt.  Get seatbelt extender. Secret it away,  quick,  quicker,  shit it’s dropped. Breathe in, suck in your gut, walk sideways down the aisle.  Apologise profusely if you accidentally touch any one. Faster. Slide in your seat. Attach extender as quickly as possible. Smile.  More.  But fast. Apologise to the man next to you.  Try not to worry about the grunt you receive back.  Sit still don’t move.  Itchy leg?  Tough.  Suck it up buttercup.  Don’t move.  Take up as little space as possible.  Thighs squeezed together, knees squeezed together, ankles squeezed together.  Don’t sniff.  Don’t smell  Don’t twitch  Don’t breathe  Don’t...be... Refuse water, coffee, tea, biscuit, lolly...  You take up too much space already you don’t n...
